According to the legend, the city gained its name after one of the freight wagons traveling from Buford lost a wheel on a high hill spilling few, large bags of sugar. The area became known as "The hill where the sugar spilled" and later on, it was shortened to "Sugar Hill".

Today the city is a quiet but vibrant community, not far from the city of Atlanta offering peaceful and high-quality life to its residents. The close proximity of Lake Lanier and Georgia Mountains enables residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities throughout the whole year.
